Sara Irene Taylor Harper died peacefully in her sleep at her home in Rockland on Wednesday, February 6, 2013.

She was born in Scottsville, VA on December 10, 1916. Her parents were Edward Burd Grubb Taylor and Jessie Irene Smith Taylor. She was the last surviving of their seven children. Irene's grandfather, Forrester E. Taylor, was a Medal of Honor recipient. She spent her childhood living at the family home, Dogwood, in Goochland County.
Mrs. Harper received a BS degree from Farmville State Teachers College now Longwood University. She taught in Chesterfield County, VA, Jonesboro, AR, Baltimore County, MD and 25 years in Front Royal at both A. S. Rhodes and E. Wilson Morrison Elementary School.
Mrs. Harper, a lifelong Episcopalian, was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church where she had served on the vestry, was past President of the Episcopal Church Women, Chairwoman of the Antique Show and Sale, Chairwoman of United Thank Offering and a member of the Altar Guild.
Mrs. Harper was a Past Treasurer of the Warren Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Past President and Treasurer of the Front Royal Music Study Club and a member of the Front Royal Retired Teachers Association. She was also an avid reader and frequent bridge player.
Mrs. Harper is survived by her sons, James A. Harper of Rockland with whom she made her home, and Edwin Taylor Harper of Alexandria, VA; and a daughter, Linda Harper Marlow of Gainesville, VA. She is also survived by the six grandchildren, Nancy Harper Marlow of Alexandria, VA, David T. Marlow of Gainesville, VA, Susan Marlow Stevens of Easton, MD, Tracy Owen of Jaratt, VA, Taylor Harper of Richmond, VA, and Alicia H. MacLeod of South Riding, VA. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren, Jordan Marlow of Front Royal, VA, Jack and Courtney Stevens of Easton, MD, Hannah and Claire Owen of Jarratt, VA, and Faith and Hope Burleson of Richmond, VA. She is also survived by her caregivers, Michelle Heater and Maureen Schofield.
Services for Mrs. Harper will be at Calvary Episcopal Church on Saturday, February 16, 2013, at eleven o'clock. Interment will follow in the columbarium at the Memorial Garden at Calvary Episcopal Church. There will be a reception in celebration of her life in the Parish Hall following the interment.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to either Warren County Humane Society or Samuel's Public Library.
