Evans Virgil Heath(1923 - 2013)

Evans Virgil Heath passed away peacefully on Monday, March 4, 2013, at the age of 89, in his home in Destin, Fla., with his loving family by his side. He was born in Waynesboro, Ga., on May 22, 1923. He graduated from Waynesboro High School in 1940. He attended and graduated from Georgia Tech class of 1943 with a BSEE in Electrical Engineering. He served in Army Intelligence during WWII. He worked for AT&T communications his whole life/career, living in many different cities, retiring in 1984 in Wyckoff, N.J., as an Engineering Director/Vice President. He moved to Destin from New Jersey in 1997. He owned a condo at Jetty East, on Holiday Isle, that he bought back in the 70's. He loved and cherished it so much that he rode over there everyday, about three times to "check out what was going on!" He took great pride in being an Amateur Radio Operator, talking to people all over the world. One of his greatest passions, which he passed on to his daughter, was football; pro team, N.Y. Giants, and college, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. As a season ticket holder, he hardly ever missed a home game! He had a very special bond with his daughter, his only child, who he went above and beyond with dad duties! He also enjoyed and excelled in the game of golf until his knees wouldn't permit him to play anymore. Fishing was also a favorite pastime. As a devout Methodist Christian, he was a member of DUMC for the past 16 years. Going to McDonalds every single morning to meet with his friends "the coffee club" was the highlight of his day as well as The Golden Coral for lunch, where he knew and made so many friends. He also was a member of a group called "The Crispy Warriors," WWII Vets that meet at Another Broken Egg restaurant every Thursday morning. Evans was a good, sweet, kind and very generous, gracious person, noted by all! People referred to him as "a true fine southern gentleman." He had one of the biggest hearts and warmest smile! His very strong will to live kept him going until it was God's calling for his final resting place. He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, love of his life, Joy Rita Pillittere Heath, on Dec. 1, 1995; and second wife, Madlyn Holsberg Heath, in 2009. He is survived by his only daughter, Rachel Joy Heath, her fiancé, Doug Haldane, both of Destin; brother, Dr. James Oliver, and wife, Sue, of Statesboro, Ga.; niece, Mary Earle Massie of Richmond, Va.; niece, Florence Suzanne Mills; and nephew, Evans Heath Massie. A graveside service was held March 8, at Magnolia Cemetery in Waynesboro, Ga. A Memorial service will be held this coming Monday, April 22, at the Destin United Methodist Church at 3 p.m.! A very special thanks to Amedisys Home Health, Synergy Home Care, caregivers, Denise Jackson and Renee Longstreet(who was like part of the family and loved so much), Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home, in Statesboro, Ga., Davis Watkins Funeral Home, and Emerald Coast Hospice!
