Mrs. Martha Olivia Commander, 95, of the Darlington Community, died April 22, 2013, at Sacred Heart Hospital in South Walton County. She was a resident of Darlington, Fla., for 67 years and a member of Darlington Baptist Church where she served as the pianist for many years.
She is preceded in death by her parents, M.D. and Ella Harrell; husband, Fred H. Commander; sister, Christine Harrell; and son, John Commander. She is survived by two sons, Carl and wife, Carolyn, and Danny and wife, Susan; grandchildren, William Commander, Megan and husband, Jesse Bivens, Jason Commander and wife, Christine, Matt Hinson, Amanda Floyd and husband, Wesley, and Dexton Mckee and wife, Burnice; and great-grandchildren, Alley Oats, Olivia and Julian Floyd, and Kayleigh and Garrett Commander.
Martha was born in Lakewood, Fla., on Oct. 7, 1917, to Ella and M.D. Harrell. She graduated from Coffee County High School at Enterprise, Ala., in 1935. She attended the Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Birmingham, Ala., where she earned her degree in nursing in 1940.
She worked at John Brown University Hospital until the attack on Pearl Harbor. She enlisted in the Army
in 1942, serving as a surgical nurse on the Saint Mihiel Hospital Ship, traveling to Korea, France, Africa and the Mediterranean, nursing injured soldiers back to health. She served her country until the end of the war, 1946, earning the rank of Captain Chief of Surgical Nurses. She returned home to Leonia, Fla., in 1947, where she married Fred Commander, and they enjoyed 52 years of marriage, also a veteran of World War II
. Martha started her family of three boys before she continued her nursing career at Lakeside Hospital in DeFuniak Springs, Fla. After the closing of Lakeside, she worked at County Hospital until her retirement in 1979. Retirement gave her the time to spend with her family, play her piano, listen to music, read, work in her garden and volunteer in her church and community.
She was a gracious, humble, phenomenal women, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
A time of visitation will be held from 2 to 3 p.m., Thursday, April 25, 2013, at Darlington Baptist Church at 4751 Highway 2 East, Westville, FL 32464.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m., Thursday, April 25, 2013, at Darlington Baptist Church with the Rev. Greg Alford and the Rev. Terry Smith officiating.
Floral arrangements are being accepted or donations may be made to the Women in Military Service for America Memorial at 200 N Glebe Road, Arlington, VA 22203.
Burial will follow in the Darlington Baptist Church Cemetery.
