Michael R. Waite(1960 - 2013)

Michael R. Waite, affectionately known as "Cornbread," passed away on Aug. 24, 2013, in Seagrove Beach, Fla.
Cornbread was born in Madrid, Spain, on March 15, 1960. Shortly after his birth, his father, Ray Waite, of the U.S. Air Force, and his mother, Phyllis Waite, settled in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. Cornbread would spend the rest of his life along the Emerald Coast. He attended Choctaw High School and soon after began his life long occupation as a fisherman.
Other than his two children, Michael Ryan Waite and Ann Caroline Waite, his greatest love was being at sea. He was an avid outdoorsman. If he wasn't fishing, his other passion was hunting or simply walking in the woods. Also, while hunting, it was the rare opportunity that you could find him wearing shoes other than flip-flops. His beloved mother, Phyllis Waite, was a member of the Chippewah Indian Tribe, and he had the same true spirit of an American Indian, as his mother did. He was a kind soul and a strong man. He had a smile for everyone he met. Although he was a rugged man of the sea, he was also the consummate gentleman. He was very loved and he will be missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Debrah Persons and Vicki Waite; and his beloved dog, G-Dog.
He is survived by his son, Michael, who is also a fisherman and boat captain; and his daughter, Caroline, who just graduated from Louisiana State University; his sister, Joni Powell and her husband, Barry, and their children, Brian and Elizabeth; his niece, Heather Jernnigan and her husband, Brian, and their children, Brandon and Caleb. Also, by his long time love, Aimee Alderson.
Cornbread's life will be celebrated on Friday, Aug. 30, at 6 p.m., aboard "The New Florida Girl" in Destin Harbor.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Michael R. Waite's name to the Coastal Conservation Association of South Walton at http://www.ccaflorida.org.
