Otis Rainey, age 85, of Baker, Fla., passed away March 23, 2013, at the VA Hospice Facility in Biloxi, Miss. Otis was born July 24, 1927, in Middlesboro, Ky.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Rainey; son, Owen Rainey; and three sisters, Margie Ward, Lena Browning and Evelyn Black.
He is survived by three daughters, Cathy Heckman, Carla Padilla and Susan Jordan; one son, William Cady; two sisters, Shirley Rife and Wanda Benson; three brothers, Cawood Rainey, Wallace Rainey and Ronald Rainey; 15 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Otis lived his life in service to his country and others. Otis joined the U.S. Navy
and stayed with the U.S. Navy until his release at the end of hostilities. Otis then joined the U.S. Air Force
and served in multiple capacities until his retirement from the Drone Squadron at Tyndall Air Force Base in 1973. While in the U.S. Air Force his meritorious service to his country earned him three Bronze Stars
. Otis loved the U.S. Air Force and his service commitment extended beyond his retirement from the U.S. Air Force when he joined the Civil Service as a fireman until his retirement at Hurlburt Field, Fla., in 1993. Otis had a total of 44 years of service to his country and tours in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Otis also served as a Child Advocacy in Lake Wales, Fla.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 28, 2013, at Pyron Chapel in Baker, Fla., beginning at noon with the Rev. Neil Thompson officiating. A time of visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Committal services will follow at Pyron Chapel Cemetery with full military honors provided by the United States Air Force. Flowers are being accepted.
