Robert M Newman(1931 - 2013)

Robert M Newman, age 82, of Niceville, Fla., passed away on Wednesday, June 19, 2013. He was born on June 1, 1931. in Lima, Ohio, to Hays and Maurine Newman.
Robert graduated from Defiance High School in Defiance, Ohio, in 1949 and then he attended the University of Michigan and later Ohio State University, where he received his doctorate in dental surgery from Ohio State University College of Dentistry in 1956. After graduating from the university he joined the U.S. Air Force and served as a general dental officer at Bergstrom Air Force Base, Texas. He entered private practice in Zanesville, Ohio, in 1959. After two years in private practice he returned to active duty as assistant chief of oral surgery at Carswell Air Force Base, Texas. Robert was then assigned as chief of oral surgery at Torrejon Air Base, Spain, until he returned to the United States in 1967 where he served as chief of oral surgery at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas. In 1970 he entered dental administration as base dental surgeon at Reese Air Force Base, Texas. From 1972 to 1973, Col. Newman was assigned to Udorn RTAFB, Thailand as base dental surgeon. He returned to the U.S. as assistant base dental surgeon at Norton Air Force Base, Calif.
Col. Newman excelled in dental administration and served as base dental surgeon at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas (1975-1977), Charleston Air Force Base, S.C. (1977-1981), and Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark. (1981-1985). He assumed the responsibility and leadership of the Dental Clinic as base dental surgeon at Tinker Air Force Base, Okla., in August, 1985.
His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award Ribbon with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Vietnam Service Medal with Device, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
Col. Newman was a member of the American Dental Association, Association of Military Surgeons, Psi Omega dental fraternity, and Omega Lodge # 564, F. & A.M., Air Force Association, and Retired Officers Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his loving wife, Juanita Newman.
He is survived by one son; William Riley of Richardson, Texas; and two daughters, Debra Hill of Niceville, Fla., and Pamela Cranford of Talihina, Okla. He is also survived by five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
There will be a time of visitation from 5 to 7 p.m., on Friday, June 21, 2013, at Heritage Gardens Funeral Home with a funeral service beginning at 10 a.m., on Saturday, June 22, at the funeral home.
