Dr. Robert Mitchell Jaye, age 81, passed away peacefully on his birthday with his family by his side on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013. He was born Oct. 16, 1932, in Bay Minette, Ala., to James and Grace McLain Jaye.
Dr. Jaye was a resident of Walton County. He was Baptist by faith. And a member of the First Baptist Church of DeFuniak Springs, Fla., where he served as pastor from 1973 to 1982, having pastored numerous churches during the 50 years of his ministry as a pastor. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict
serving his country in the United States Navy
as a flight gunner, having served in numerous combat missions. He went to William Carey College receiving his bachelor's degree in history and philosophy, he also attended New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary receiving his Bachelor of Divinity and Master of Theology, and attended Luther Rice Seminary receiving his Doctorate of Ministry. He also received a Doctorate of Divinity at Ridgedale Theological Seminary. He also studied and researched at Oxford University in England, and served on mission trips to South Africa and Ecuador. He also taught a Comparative Religions class at Okaloosa Walton Junior College. He served as an adjunct professor at what is now Baptist College of Florida. Chaplain of VQ Squadron and served as supply minister at Euchee Valley Presbyterian Church. He also pioneered a school for developmentally disabled children in Tatnall County, Ga.
Dr. Jaye was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother; and brother, James Monroe Jaye, Jr.; and first wife, Lunell Duck Jaye, the mother of his children.
Dr. Jaye is survived by his loving wife, Janet Brannon Jaye, of DeFuniak Springs; his children, Robert M. Jaye, Jr. and wife, Karen, of Gainesville, Fla., Davis M. Jaye and wife, Susan, of Naperville, Ill., Jenny Gomillion and husband, Larry, and Jeremy Saunders and wife, Rhonda, of DeFuniak Springs; one brother, Thomas D. Jaye and wife, Sally, of Crawfordville, Fla.; and grandchildren, Robert M. Jaye, III, Catherine Jaye, Chelsea Jaye, Anna Lunell Jaye, Grady Luke Gomillion, Allie Saunders, Annabelle Saunders and Amelia Saunders.
Visitation services will be held 10 to 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 18, 2013, at First Baptist Church in DeFuniak Springs; 216 East Live Oak Ave., DeFuniak Springs, FL 32435.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 18, 2013, at First Baptist Church with Dr. Bobby Tucker officiating, and with military honors by the United States Navy.
Burial will follow at the Cross Roads Cemetery, 9551 Highway 138, Bay Minette, AL 36507, at 4 p.m., Friday, Oct. 18, 2013.
Pallbearers will be Robert M. Jaye, Jr., Davis M. Jaye, Robert M. Jaye, III, Harold Duck, Danny Edwards and Grady Luke Gomillion. Honorary pallbearers will be the past and present deacons of the First Baptist Church of DeFuniak Springs.
The family would like to offer a special thanks to Chautauqua Rehabilitation and Nursing Center staff and Kristina, Wes, and Sherry with Regency Hospice and also Lesley Scott, his home caregiver and friend.
