Bruce R. Hoon, age 74, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends on Dec. 9, 2008.
Bruce was born on Feb. 11, 1934, in Columbus, Ohio, to Robert E. Hoon and Ethyl Jane Meadows Hoon. The family moved to Deland, Fla., in 1945, where Bruce graduated from Deland High School. After graduation from the University of Miami he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He served his country for 24 years, retiring in 1979 at the rank of lieutenant colonel. Following his retirement, he became very active in his community and was a member of several civic organizations. Bruce was a Charter Life Member of AMVETS Post 35, life member of VFW
Post 5450, and a member of the American Legion Post 75. His heart was in the AMVETS organization, where he held several offices, including that of commander.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Linda Hoon; two children, Bruce Gregory Hoon and Karen Maierle (Gregg); three stepchildren, Aaron Adams, Angela D. Brunelle (Terry) and Amanda D. Hensley (Ron); the mother of his children, Alice Hoon; and one sister, Twila Lee Pinder. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews; and many, many friends.
A time of visitation will be held on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Whitehurst Powell Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 28, at AMVETS Post 35 on John King Road.
Flowers will be accepted, or donations may be made in his memory to the Honor Flight Society or Emerald Coast Hospice.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the doctors and staff of the pulmonary and oncology clinic at Eglin Air Force Base, Gentiva Home Health Care, and Emerald Coast Hospice.
