Billy Edison Gartman passed away on Aug. 1, 2014. He was born on Jan. 7, 1932, in Vernon, Ala.

He met and married the love of his life, Masuko Inoue Gartman at Yokota Air Force Base, Japan on July 24, 1953.
Billy served the USAF honorably for 22 years. As a flight engineer Billy supported the testing and execution of recovery methods of downed pilots during the Vietnam War; receiving the Air Medal for meritorious achievement during aerial flight and many other decorations throughout his career.
He had a green thumb, loved to have the family together, was independent, resourceful, patient and incredibly outgoing.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Pearl Gartman; his wife, Masuko Gartman; son, Eddie Gartman; sister, Eddie Pearl Cash and nephew, Steve Cash.
Surviving family include his grandson, Billy Gartman II and wife Candice; granddaughter, Masumi Gartman; grandson, Eddie Gartman II; great-grandchildren, Madison, Conner, and Mason Gartman; brothers, Harry Gartman and James Gartman; sister, Martha Keplinger and her husband Al; as well as, several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Covenant Hospice and the staff of Belvedere Commons for their assistance and care of Billy.
A graveside service with military honors will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2014 at Beal Cemetery at 9 a.m. The family will receive friends a half hour before the service.
