Catherine "Kitty" Hogg Connors, a resident of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., since 1964 passed away in Fort Walton Beach on Sunday, March 23, 2014, at age 79. She was born on April 15, 1934, in Liverpool, England to James and Jane Hogg.
Catherine is survived by her husband of 42 years, John S. Connors, of Fort Walton Beach; sons, Robert E. Murphy, Jr. (Susan) of Los Angeles, Calif., and James H. Murphy (Lori) of Miramar Beach, Fla.; daughter, Jane M. Wofford of Fort Walton Beach; grandchildren, Robert E. Wofford II of Fort Walton Beach, James M. Wofford of Lafayette, La., (Hollie) and Preston H. Murphy of Miramar Beach; sisters, Amy Wright of Sun City, Ariz., (William) and Jane Rusk of Ashton-in-Makerfield, England; and many nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren in England and the United States.
She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Jane Hogg; her only brother, James "Buddy" Hogg, who was in the Royal Navy and lost at sea in WWII; sister, Marie Morear and husband, Albert; brother-in-law, Norman Rusk; son-in-law, Robert E. Wofford; and first husband, Robert E. Murphy, Sr.
As a military wife stationed in England, France, and Japan, Kitty had a chance to travel in Europe and the Far East where she enjoyed meeting new people and learning about their culture. She was a great athlete, especially running. In Japan she used to run around the 6-8 mile perimeter of Yokota Air Base almost every day with her dog, "Fuji," to the amazement and admiration of may base personnel.
During the Vietnam War, Kitty worked at the Hurlburt Officer's Club Lounge from 1966 to 1972. All the patrons, both active duty and retired enjoyed her engaging personality, beautiful smile and classy attire.
When the "new" club opened on Sept. 25, 1969, with the Bob Hope party in attendance, Kitty received a personal letter from the Wing Commander recognizing her exceptional efforts on that memorable occasion.
In the spring and summer of 1975 Kitty helped at the Eglin Refugee Camp and opened her home to busloads of touring Vietnamese refugees to calm their fears and demonstrate the American way of life to our newest immigrants.
Kitty belonged to several organizations including the American Woman Fitness Spa where she enjoyed teaching fitness classes; the Eglin Retired Officers Wives Club where she always participated as a fashion model; and the Air Commando Association for over 40 years where she served as the ACA president's wife for the Bicentennial year in 1976.
Kitty loved music, singing and dancing. Lawrence Welk on Saturday night was her favorite. Her top priority though was her home, yard, and pool which she personally maintained for many years. Her efforts were recognized by Mayor John Shortall with the award of "Yard of the Month" sign. She also loved to decorate for holidays, especially Halloween and later Christmas where the place was known as the "Gingerbread House."
She was also a cat lover, especially her twins, "Princess" and "Duchess," who lived to 17 years old and brought so much joy and enjoyment to the household.
Kitty was a remarkable woman who never met a stranger. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends who loved her so much, but we are comforted in knowing that she is now pain-free and safe in God's hands.
