The second child of Edward Har-man Cabaniss II and Marjorie Weatherly Cabaniss, he was born in Birmingham, Ala., on January 21, 1916, and received degrees from Ala-bama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He married Mary Albritton of Andalusia, Ala., on April 13, 1940, and joined the Army in September 1941, where he served in World War II as a lieutenant with the 20th Combat Engineers Regiment in North Africa, Sicily, and Normandy. On his return, he worked at General Electric in Schenectady, N.Y., for 32 years, earning a dozen pat-ents.
Ned is predeceased in 2001 by his wife of 61 years. He is survived by two sons, Edward Harman Cabaniss IV of Fairview, N.C., and John Milner Cabaniss of Raleigh, six granddaughters, and eleven great-grandchildren-and by his daughters-in-law and grandsons-in-law, to whom he was also father and grandfather. He was a sailor, reader, tinkerer, puzzler-and, quite simply, extraordinary.
