Henry M Sherry, 88, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., passed on Dec. 7, 2013, at his daughter's home in Georgia with family, friends and beloved pointer, Sunny, at his side.
Mr. Sherry was born on Dec. 8, 1924, in Savannah, Ga., to Henry and Gladys Greene Sherry. He was raised at Bethesda Boys Orphanage from 1928-1939, along with his "100 brothers."
On his 17th Birthday in 1941, Mr. Sherry joined the U.S. Navy. He proudly served his country in WWII and Korean War before retiring as a Chief Petty Officer in 1965.
Mr. Sherry settled in Fort Walton Beach where he resided for the next 50 years. He later retired from Vitro Services. He then began a new career selling real-estate. In his spare time, he volunteered with hospice and was a member of the Moose and Elks Lodge of Okaloosa County.
Mr. Sherry's interest included family, fishing, bird hunting, dancing, telling tales, and making those around him smile, as he never met a stranger.
Mr. Sherry was preceded in death by his Uncle, James T. Greene, and beloved sisters, Adele and Ann.
Survivors include his son, Michael Sherry of Destin, Fla.; his daughter and son-in-law, Colleen Ann and Takatoshi Yamamto of Acworth, Ga.; grandsons, Brian and wife, Michelle Powers, Jenkins of Smyrna, Tenn., and Austin Sherry of Nashville, Tenn.; granddaughter, Michelle Jenkins of Cartersville, Ga.; and great-grandchildren, Michael and Blake Henry Jenkins of Smyrna, Tenn. He leaves many nieces and nephews. Special mention of longtime companion, Shirley Smith and her family, of Fort Walton Beach.
Funeral services will be held at Bonaventure Funeral Home 2520 Bonaventure Road Savannah, GA 31404., on Wednesday, Dec. 11, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Bethesda Academy, 9520 Ferguson Ave., Savannah, GA 31406.
