James M. "Johnny " Johnson, III, passed away in Shalimar, Fla., on May 7, 2014. Johnny was born on Dec. 18, 1945, in Mobile, Ala., to James M. and Annie Mae Johnson. He moved to the area in 1956. He graduated from Choctawhatchee High School in 1964 and received a BS degree from Auburn University (War Eagle!) in 1969.
Johnny entered the U.S. Army and served as an air defense artillery officer in Germany and in Vietnam, receiving the Bronze Star. He returned to the area in 1972, received an MBA from the University of West Florida and began a career in banking in Okaloosa County at Valparaiso Bank & Trust, Vanguard Bank, Sunshine Bank, Regions Bank and Premier Community Bank.
Johnny was active in community affairs and served as President of the Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce and President of United Way. He was a member of the Fort Walton Beach Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow, Rotarian of the Year and was especially proud of 42 years of perfect attendance at club meetings. Since 1974, Johnny was an active member of the Krewe of Bowlegs serving on the Board, Honor Guard, First Mate XXXI and Captain Billy Bowlegs XXXVII in 1991-1992.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Marie; his mother, Annie Mae Johnson; his sister, Anita Dunn; his brothers, Dan (Marci) Johnson and David (Laura) Johnson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Private graveside services will be conducted by the Rev. Sharon A. Schuler at Beal Memorial Cemetery. A reception for family and friends will be held at Two Trees Restaurant from 1 to 3 p.m., on Monday, May 12.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Johnny's name to the FWB Rotary Club Scholarship Fund, P. 0. Box 892, Fort Walton Beach, FL 32549.
