Joseph W. Simmons, U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant (Ret.), born Aug. 13, 1943, passed away Jan. 11, 2013, at his home in Crestview, Fla.

He proudly served more than 32 years in the Air Force (active and reserve) flying as a Loadmaster on the C-130B Transport and Sensor Operator on the AC-130A Gunship. He was the recipient of numerous medals and awards throughout his career, including the Distinguished Flying Cross in Operation Desert Storm. He also served as an Air Reserve Technician at Duke Field, Fla., for over 25 years before retiring in 1998. Joe was a member of the VFW 5450, AmVets Post 0078 and the Niceville Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Eloise; his step-children, Steve Simpson and Michael Young; sister, Brenda Carr (husband, Jim); and brother, William (wife, Diane). He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Esther.
A memorial service with military honors will be held on Jan. 22, 2013, at 1:15 p.m., at Barrancas National Cemetery, Pensacola, Fla.
