Patricia Joann Sanders Pascarella passed Tuesday Feb. 26, 2013, in the evening hours with her husband Joseph and sister-in-law Louise at her side. Joann was born Sept. 12, 1942, in Minden, La., where her parents and grandparents resided. She graduated from C.E. Byrd High School of Shreveport, La., in 1960. She married soon after and took off on her whirlwind life (Peace Corps, Penn House Washington D.C., USPS-EEO Coordinator, Americans for Prosperity, …).

Joann spent much of her adult life living and working in the Charlottesville, Va., area. She was very active in Charlottesville Friends (Quaker) Meeting and as an active director and fundraiser for On Our Own Program (which provides shelter and other resources to the homeless and mentally ill). She is fondly remembered by her many friends and loved ones in Virginia. She retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 2002.

After her retirement, she and Joseph moved to Valparaiso, Fla., to be close to her son Mark and his family. Ever the avid reader, she especially enjoyed studying French and History. She actively supported the local libraries, Wounded Wear Project, and Niceville-Valparaiso Tea Party as a key leader and organizer.

During the last decade, Joann and Joseph traveled extensively to western, eastern and southern Europe and across the United States.

Joann devoted boundless energy to her loving marriage with Joseph, with whom she would have celebrated their 25th anniversary this year. She worked diligently creating a lovely home and garden, for which she was rightfully proud of the beautiful results.

Her parents, James David Shepherd and Uva Dell Sanders Shepherd, sister Shirley, and her son Jonathan precede Joann in death. She is survived by her loving family: husband Joseph Pascarella, sister Dorothy Moore, cousin Bobby Welch, sister-in-law Louise Graham, life-long friend Georgia Wahl, son Mark Hunter (and Toni), daughters Dominique Mendez (and Tony) and Thaedra Pascarella, son Philippe Pascarella (and Susie), and grandchildren Victoria and Ian Hunter, as well as many nieces, nephews and loved ones.

Joann's unending optimism, radiant energy, and complete love will be deeply missed by her family and community, where she touched upon many lives.

A memorial service will be held at the Trinity Valparaiso Presbyterian Church, 44 Southview Avenue Valparaiso, FL 32580, on Saturday afternoon, March 9 starting at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please donate to On Our Own, 123 4th Street NW, Charlottesville, VA 22903 or Wounded Wear, P.O. Box 64724, Virginia Beach, VA 23467-4724.
