Col. (Ret) William Thomas Smith III, 64, passed away on Wednesday, July 17, 2013.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Maria Smith; one son, William T. Smith IV; one daughter, Christina Daniels (Patrick); one grandchild; mother, Rosemary Smith; and one sister, Kathy Thornburg.
Col. (Ret) Smith graduated with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Notre Dame in 1971, and received a master's degree in human resources from Troy State University in 1993. William enlisted in the United States Army in 1972, and served with distinction in the Army Air Defense Artillery for 28 years; retiring in 1999 with the rank of Colonel. He was a decorated leader, earning numerous commendations including the Legion of Merit (2nd award), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (7th award), Army Commendation Medal (3rd award), Army Superior Unit Award, National Defense Service Medal (2ndaward), Southwest Asia Service Medal with One Bronze Service Star (BSS), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (4th award), and the Kuwait Liberation Medal (K). Following his military career, Col. (Ret) Smith worked for Raytheon Company.
A private service will be held by the family at Barrancas National Cemetery.
