Passed away on March 3, 2014, at the age of 80. He was born on Nov. 12, 1933, to William Lucious and Ola Elizabeth Smith in New Bern, N.C. He came here in 1956 from Cherry Point, N.C., to work at Eglin Air Force Base. During His 39 years working as Civil Service at Eglin he worked at the Engine Shop, Jet Engine Testing, and Quality Control. Joe enjoyed life to the fullest with fishing and just being with his family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Edna Jackson Smith and son, Mitch Smith from Birmingham, Ala. He is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters. There will be a Visitation on Thursday, March 6, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Emerald Coast Funeral Home, 113 Racetrack Rd N.E, Fort Walton Beach, Fla. Service will be held on Friday, March 7, at 11 a.m., at Emerald Coast Funeral Home, followed by the Committal Service at Beal Memorial Cemetery. Family would like to say thanks to Covenant Hospice and Superior Residence of Niceville for their kind compassion and care.
