A descendant of the Pilgreen, Potts, Bamberg, and Ryan from the original family settlement in Charleston, S.C. She was born April 17, 1922, to Rodney R and Mary P Bamberg in the farming community of Brent, Ala. She graduated Bibb County High School in 1940 and immediately was hired for her speed and accuracy as a typist at Eglin Field, Fla. She was Col. Jimmy Doolittle's typist during WWII while at Eglin and accomplished a successful 40 year career in civil service.
She was a current and active member in the Order of Eastern Star for almost 60 years, initiated in Fort Walton Lodge chapter # 202. She held numerous positions in the lodge including worthy Matron twice as well as several Grand Chapter positions. She was a member of the International Order of Rainbow serving as Mother Advisor and Grand Advisor positions. She was a current and active member of the Fort Walton Woman's club, PaceSetters and, Red Hat Society. She was actively employed and helped at almost every auction at Garrett's Auction House where she the enjoyed people and good conversation. She loved traveling the world to Mexico, France, Germany, Thailand, England and Scotland. She was an active gardener, enjoyed scrapbooking, family and friends. She was a good Alabama cook, a Steele Magnolia and taught her children well. She will surely be missed.
She was married to William J. Garrett II who adored her and was the father of her three children. She also married Orel T. Hooks who cherished her for 33 years and every Friday night was date night.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Willard Bamberg, and sister, Mable Johnson. She is survived by her loving family: brother, Bobby R Bamberg; daughters, Judy Garrett Burton and Susan Garrett Burch (Lee Burch); and son, William J Garrett III. She is also survived by Whitney A. Garrett, Michelle E. Williams, Tracy Garrett Minnis, Tricia L Garrett, Troy R Garrett, Andrew M Garrett, Everett Garrett Cowart, Justin Garrett Cowart, and great-great grandchildren as well as many close nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends; and loving companion, Peaches, the Dachshund.
Services will be conducted on Monday, March 17, 2014, at 11 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church of Fort Walton Beach. Family will receive friends from 10 to 10:40 a.m., at the Church with a Eastern Star Service at 10:45 a.m. Committal Services will follow at Beal Memorial Cemetery. Our mother would want to thank and hug Drs. Kevin Jones, Thomas Fitzgerald, and Nathan Patterson. A luncheon will follow at the Masonic Alpha Lodge 172, 130 Brooks Street SE, FWB, FL 32548.
