Charles Edgar Long, Jr., age 101, passed away at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Miramar Beach, Fla., on March 19, 2014. Born June 26, 1912, in Memphis, Tenn., and raised in Homes County, Miss., he attended Mississippi State University.

He saw active duty in the South Pacific during World War II as a young lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and was particularly proud of his military service. Charles retired from the Naval Reserve with the rank of lieutenant commander.
Charles was an avid ham radio operator and a member of the First Baptist Church in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his third wife, Regina, and is survived by his sons, James R. Long of Bellingham, Wash., Thomas Long of Perth, Australia, and Steven Long of Huntsville, Ala.; daughters, Mary Louise Long of Great Falls, Mont., and Sophia Coleman of Tucson, Ariz.; step-daughter, Linda Percy of Ocala, Fla.; and brother, James F. Long of Niceville, Fla.
Charles will have a committal inurnment service with Military Honors at Barrancas National Cemetery, 1 Cemetery Road, NAS Pensacola, Fla., for family and friends on Monday, March 31, 2014, beginning at 12:30 p.m.
