Lt. Col. Robert T. "Soupy" Campbell of Shalimar, Fla., passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2014. He was born April 3, 1927, in Niagara Falls, N.Y., the son of Daniel H. and Clara I. Campbell.
Soupy was raised on a farm in Western New York and graduated from Cornell University where he received his commission in the United States Air Force through the ROTC program. He became a fighter pilot and flew in combat in both the Korean and South East Asia wars. He was squadron commander of the 12th TAC Fighter Squadron on Okinawa. After a tour in the Pentagon, he joined the Tactical Air Warfare Center at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., and retired there in 1980. Soupy was a command pilot with more than 4700 hours, primarily in tactical fighter jet aircraft. His awards and decorations include the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross with two oak leaf clusters, Air Medal with eight oak leaf clusters and several other U.S. and foreign decorations.
After military retirement, Soupy formed his own company and did extensive landscaping and irrigation projects in Northwest Florida. Soupy was also a weapons consultant for major aerospace industry. Soupy enjoyed golf for over 60 years. He was an avid Florida State Seminole football fan.
Active in the community, Soupy was a longtime member of the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce, Air Force Association, former member of the board, Ocean City Wright Fire Control District, former Committeeman for the Okaloosa County Republican Executive Committee, a member of the Order of Daedalians, and a volunteer with the Retiree Activities Office serving at the information desk at the Eglin Air Force Base hospital. He was a member of the church council and an usher at Shalimar United Methodist Church.
Soupy is survived by son Daniel Stuart and wife Sue and their four children living in Valrico, Fla. He is preceded in death by his wife, Bobbie Jean and their son, Robert Scott.
The family will receive friends at Emerald Coast Funeral Home, 112 Racetrack Road N.E., Fort Walton Beach, Fla., on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 between 5 and 7 p.m., with a private service being held by the Rev. Dr. Larry Bryars. Funeral services will be held at Shalimar United Methodist Church, 1 Old Ferry Road, Shalimar, at 10 a.m., on Wednesday, April 2, 2014, with Pastor Jonathon Hart officiating. Internment at Beal Memorial Cemetery with full military honors will immediately follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Shalimar United Methodist Church building fund in Soupy's honor or the .
