Sara Jane Burger, 94, of Niceville, Fla., passed away April 24, 2014, of natural causes.
The funeral service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1407 East John Sims Pkwy, Niceville, FL on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, beginning at 11 a.m. A private burial will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery.
Jane was born in Connellsville, Pa., on June 30, 1919. She earned two Bachelor of Arts degrees in History and English from Hood College in Frederick, Md., in 1941.
Jane was married to Lt. Col. Joseph M. Burger (United States Air Force Retired) on Oct. 1, 1943; they were married 64 years.
Jane's patriotism during WWII led to her serving proudly as a Seaman Second Class in the Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). She always smiled when she told the story of how she and Joe met on a blind date in Miami when they were both on active duty. Another great memory she told was when she was working at a radio station on Dec. 7, 1941, and had to use a dictionary and map to find a place called "Pearl Harbor" and had to interrupt the chaplain's radio transmitted Sunday service to report the horrible news of the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
When Jane and Joe retired to Niceville, their love of golf brought them together with many longtime friends. She was actively involved with the Eglin Air Force Base Retired Officer Wives Club and the Ladies Golf Association for thirty years playing golf and bridge with her friends. She was an avid reader and a loyal member of the Bayou Book Club in Niceville. She and Joe loved to travel in their beloved "Volvo" vehicles to play golf or visit family throughout the USA. Jane had many special friends throughout her life, including Pat Rice, Bill Miller, Vicki Keller, Lynn Nickerson and Rick Kirby.
Jane is survived by three daughters, Sandra Ann Burger of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Nancy Ann Bennett (m. Ron Bennett) formerly from Niceville and currently from Boynton Beach, Fla., and Elizabeth Jane Jones (m. Keith Jones) also formerly from Niceville and currently from Boynton Beach; daughter-in-law, Kerry Burger and family living in Westport, Wash.; grandchildren, Jeff Kirby (m. Cheryl Kirby), Chris Burger (m. Jamie Burger), Brian Bennett (m. Evelyn Bennett), John MacAulay and James Bennett; great-grandchildren, Phillip Zitzelman, Thomas J. Burger, Isabella Burger, Alexandria Burger, Michael Bennett, Sebastian Bennett, Biale Bennett and Billy Blackman; aunt, Sally Sellers; niece, Cindy Hoover; nephew, Bill Hoover; sisters-in-law, Anne Hoover and Hazel Victoria. She also cherished her extended Silcox family.
Jane is preceded in death by her loving husband, Joe (2007); her wonderful son, Thomas (2004); and her parents Bill and Irene Hoover of Fort Lauderdale.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Donation Department, Hospice by the Sea, 1531 W. Palmetto Park Road, Boca Raton, FL 33486, and 800-633-2577. The family of Sara Jane Burger wishes to extend sincere thanks to Hospice by the Sea for their compassionate care.
