Odis Mitchell Sapp passed away peacefully at Crestview Rehabilitation Center (CRC) on Saturday, June 14, 2014. He was born Aug. 17, 1922, in Crestview, Fla., to William B. Sapp and Alcedonia E. Edge. He was an active member of Lifepoint Church, serving as C.A. President, Trustee, Superintendent of Sunday School, Sunday School Teacher, and Deacon. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Sapp; his parents; two sisters, Rosie Gordon and Opal Jones; and two brothers, Oscar and Cleatus Sapp. He was a distinguished Veteran of World War II, receiving the EAME Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, American Theater Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He retired from Eglin Air Force Base after 35 years as a supervisor in the 3201st Transportation Squadron. He also worked as a security guard for Fairchild Industries for several years. He was a mighty man of God, prayer warrior and spiritual father to countless people. He testified to everyone he met of the goodness of God truly leaving a lasting legacy. His grandfather, Moses Asberry Sapp, had tremendous success pioneering the blueberry cultivation commercial industry that made Crestview famous by becoming known as the "Blueberry Capital of the World."
Survivors include his daughters, Glenda Gordon and husband Jerrell, and Sherrie Dewana Johnson and husband Ronnie; and son, Michael Sapp of Crestview; seven grandchildren, Shane Gordon of Cantonment, Fla., Kristi Oakes and husband Timmy of Milton, Fla., Damon Johnson and wife Darenda, Scott Sapp and fiancé Susan Parr of Navarre, Fla., Brittany Kelly and husband Derek of Waco, Ky., Rachel McDuffie and husband Joseph, and Angela Sapp of Crestview; seven great-grandchildren, Elijah Oakes, Tyler Oakes, Emma Oakes, Rilye Johnson, Radley Johnson and Reese Johnson, Oliver McDuffie; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 2 p.m., on Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at Lifepoint Church in Crestview. Viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m., on Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at the Whitehurst Funeral Home. Rev. Mark English of Lifepoint Church will be officiating. Burial will follow at Live Oak Park Memorial Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the staff, CNAs, physical therapy, and nurses at CRC. We would especially like to thank our wonderful caregivers, Jean Fortenberry and Teresa Barrow, for their loving care of Dad each day. Flower donations are accepted or donations to a church ministry in Dad's honor.
