Francis Loring ""Frank"" Thomas passed away peacefully at Superior Residences in Niceville, Fla., on June 20. He was under hospice care and had never fully recovered from a fall at home in November of 2013. Frank was 90 years old.
Born in Lynn, Mass., on June 15, 1924, Frank was one of five children of Walter Thomas and the former Cora Daggett. He had three brothers and one sister and while growing up in New England acquired a life-long interest in sports and outdoor activities.
During World War II, Frank dropped out of high school to join the United States Army in 1943. He served in the Signal Corp., in southern France, Austria and Germany and began a military career that lasted 20 years, ending with his retirement at the rank of major.
He married Virginia ""Ginny"" Quinton of Dearborn, Mich., and they remained together until his passing, raising four daughters and moving to Massachusetts, New Jersey, Virginia, North Carolina, Alaska and Florida. He taught his daughters to be independent and organized, ""prior, proper, planning"" was one of his favorite sayings.
Frank played baseball and hockey and was player/coach of the Army hockey team in Europe. He was a fisherman and also became very interested in radio controlled model airplanes. His love of RC modeling, both building and flying, carried him through his later years.
He is survived by his daughters, Cherie Felts, Kennesaw, Ga., Toni Thomas, Tulsa, Okla., Cathy Clabaugh, Las Vegas, Nev., and Jeri Turner, Santa Ana, Calif. His brother Dave Thomas lives in Georgia and sister Virginia Conolly resides in New England.
