Tommy Joe Johnson, Sr., age 76, of Crestview, Fla. formerly of Florissant, Mo. passed away on Sunday, June 22, 2014, at his residence. He was born September 21, 1937, to Dwight E. and Reba C. Johnson in Saltillo, Miss.

Tommy was born at home in Saltillo. During World War II the family moved to Mobile, Ala. where his father worked at the Mobile shipyards. Later the family moved to Prairie, Miss. where his father worked for a munitions plant. After the war the family moved to Egypt, Miss. and purchased a store and service station. He lived and worked at the store until graduating high school.
After high school, Tommy went to Mississippi State University for a time, and then joined the Army, serving several years, including two years in Eritria, Africa. After an honorable discharge, he returned to Mississippi State College to complete his degree in Aerospace Engineering.
After graduation, Tommy worked for the Chrysler Corporation Space division in New Orleans, La. working on the Saturn V rocket program. He later moved to St. Louis, Mo. to work for McDonnell Douglas. He left McDonnell Douglas to attend St. Louis University where he completed a Masters Degree in Engineering Mechanics. After graduation, he worked for Emerson Electric Company for a year before returning to McDonnell Douglas where he worked in various engineering and programming roles.
In 1994, he retired from McDonnell Douglas and moved to Crestview to work for TYBRIN Corporation until his full retirement in 2000. He was an avid gardener, an amateur photographer and perpetual tinkerer.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister her spouse, Martha Dean and George Edwards.
Tommy is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Betty A. Johnson nee Meier; daughter, Rebecca (Randy) Redding of Pensacola, Fla.; son, Tommy J. Johnson Jr. of St. Charles, Mo.; grandchildren, Carter and Megan Johnson; daughter-in-law, Kristine M. Johnson of St. Charles, Mo; brother, Wayne (Molly) Johnson of Miami, Fla.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014, in the chapel of Davis-Watkins Crestview Memorial, 492 East Pine Avenue, Crestview, FL 32539, and beginning at 4 p.m.
