Vallie Lorene ""Val"" Nunes, 86, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., passed away on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014. She was born in Crestview, Fla., daughter of, Val Clayton Clarke and Opal Bush Clarke and stepdaughter of, Percy W. Dunn. She grew up in Crestview where she attended local schools.
Val and Lucky Nunes' love story began at a dance at Eglin Air Force Base, where Lucky played in the Air Force band. During a solo, he noticed a beautiful redhead their eyes met and she winked at him! He asked her to dance, and there began their lifelong romance. They celebrated their 62nd anniversary in August. Val and Lucky lived in Crestview and Orlando, Fla. for a short time, but lived most of their life together on Cinco Bayou in Fort Walton Beach.
Val is survived by her husband, N. J. ""Lucky"" Nunes; and by three children, Teresa B. Forrester (Dick) of Eatonton, Ga., Tasha N. Hall (Allen) of Atlantic Beach, Fla., Tonya L. Nunes of Fort Walton Beach; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She also was very fond of her niece, Alayna Alderman (Rio) of Rochester, N.Y. She was predeceased by sisters, Jean Grave and Madalyn Gray.
Val worked at Eglin Air Force Base, Okaloosa County School Superintendent office and several businesses as a bookkeeper, before becoming chief financial officer at Lucky Nunes Agency. She delighted in family gatherings, particularly working puzzles and playing cards with her children and grandchildren and passing her skills along to them. She was accomplished at home remodeling, carpentry, plumbing, gardening, landscaping, painting, piano, sewing and baking. She was a skilled member of several bridge groups, and was active in Krewe of Columbus.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, at Emerald Coast Funeral Home, 113 Racetrack Rd NE, Fort Walton Beach, FL. A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4 at Trinity United Methodist Church, reception to follow the service.
