Theresa Flores passed away the morning of Nov. 6, 2012, at Westwood Nursing Facility. She was born Theresa Gunreben in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Aug. 12, 1929, and married Vincent Flores Dec. 28, 1948. She loved to say "Be Sweet" during discussions with her many friends, who affectionately called her Terri.
The Guest Book is expired.
She is preceded in death by her parents, George and Barbara Gunreben; and youngest son, Richard Flores.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Vincent Flores; three sons, Vincent (Nina) Flores of Columbia, S.C., Donald (Kathy) Flores of Austin, Texas, George (Ginny) Flores of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; daughter, Barbara (Miguel) Correa of Fort Walton Beach; her sister, Rose and nephew, Eric (Helen) Harris both of Fort Walton Beach; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was well known and respected for her various volunteer works. She appeared in her home-made bunny costume every year at Easter, from 1997 to 2004, in Liza Jackson Park. She played Mrs. Claus for many years. She was a certified clown and runner up in 1995 at the Ms. Okaloosa County Pageant. She also served in the VFW Ladies Auxiliary 7674 and was a member of the Gold Diggers.
In her early 40s, Terri discovered belly dancing; it became a major part of her life. She founded the Kasba Dancers of Fort Walton Beach, with the motto, "We dance for all Happy Occasions." Every dancer takes a name, and Terri became "Shalimar" evolving into "The Ancient One." She began instructing students at the Fred Hendricks Recreation Center. She started annual Haflas, on her birthday for beginners to feel comfortable with the dance, with proceeds donated to charities such as: Paws, American Cancer Society and various hospices. The Kasba dancers performed at Community Festivals, nursing and retirement homes, parades, Cablethon's, banquets, birthdays, and anniversaries. Upon her retirement the city gave her a certificate in recognition for her services.
Family will receive friends Friday, Nov. 9, 6 to 8 p.m. at Emerald Coast Funeral Home, 113 Racetrack Road N.E. Fort Walton Beach, FL 32547. The service will be at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Saturday, Nov. 10, at noon. A reception will follow at VFW Post 7674, 213 Carol Ave. N.W. Fort Walton Beach, FL 32547.
Dance your way to Heaven's gate, where shining angels stand and wait. Glide and twirl on the golden floor and dance on clouds forever more, sweet Terri.
