Charles Sturgeon, 70, died at Fort Walton Medical Center on Jan. 1, 2013, early in the morning. He was born on Aug. 20, 1942, in Sumter, S.C., to Willie Arthur Sturgeon and Nellie Abigail Freeman Sturgeon.

He married Lorna C. McCalmont on Good Friday, April 16, 1965, at Wichita Falls, Texas.
He served 20-plus years in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam Era and retired from the Air Force Nov. 31, 1981. He worked at Pryor Junior High/Middle School for a time, and the students remembered Mr. Chuck fondly.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lorna; his daughter and son-in-law, Monica and Larry McWhorter; and two grandsons, Daniel Martin and Benjamin Wayne McWhorter; his son, Charles E. "Eddie" Sturgeon II; two brothers, John and Willie Sturgeon; and four sisters, Mary Bryan, Virginia Campbell, Irene Jeffreys and Ruth Landon; and many nephews and nieces.
A Memorial Service is scheduled for 11 a.m., on Jan. 26, 2013, at Oakland Baptist Church, 118 Wright Parkway, N.W., Fort Walton Beach, FL 32548.
