Lt. Col. Hugh Egbert "Dusty" Rhodes (Ret.) U.S. Air Force, 96 years of age, passed Sunday, July 14, 2013. Dusty was a longtime resident of Shalimar, Fla. Dusty graduated Robert E. Lee High School, Jacksonville, Fla., his birthplace, and continued his education at the University of West Florida where he received his teacher's professional certification. Dusty received both his associate's and bachelor's degrees at the University of Florida (Gator Nation!).
Dusty was an honored Eagle Scout, and joined the United States Air Force where he was a graduate of the USA Parachute School, U.S. Air Force Air Command and Staff, and became a command pilot. Dusty was a Life Member of the Retired Officer's Association and served our country in WWII. After his military career, Dusty was a retired teacher at Ruckel Junior High School in Niceville, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Opal Watkins Rhodes; sisters, Bessie Angie 'Becky' Rhodes and Claude Ann Henderson.
He is survived by his brother, Robert Lang Rhodes; nieces, Adrianne Moore, Robin Lang Brown and Jane Rhodes Waldman; nephew, Russell Robert Rhodes; and his dearest of friends, Gayle and Joe Williams.
The family would like to recognize the special care in his final days given by Doctors Indumathi Christopher and J. Johnson at North Okaloosa Medical Center, Dr. Sneed, Family medicine residency of the 96th Medical group at Eglin Air Force Base, and the staff of Belvedere Commons and Shoal Creek Rehabilitation center. Dusty committed his life to the service of others and this life will be void without him.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Fisher House at Eglin Air Force Base.
A Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July, 17, at 10 a.m., at Emerald Coast Funeral Home. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service for visitation. Interment will be held at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Fla., at 1:15 p.m.
