McHENRY – Ann M. Burke, 92, formerly of McHenry, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at Westbury Care Center in Lisle.
She was born June 7, 1920, in Chicago, the daughter of Edward and Mary (Ryan) Dempsey.
She attended Brentano Grade School, The Immaculata High School and Mundelein College in Chicago. She married John (Jack) Burke at St. Sylvester's Church in Chicago on June 26, 1948. They shared 58 wonderful years together, devoted to their faith and family until his death in 2006.
Ann was admired for her deep faith and compassion. She was a writer and poet. She was an active volunteer in church, school and community organizations throughout her life.
She is survived by her seven children, Rick (Christy) Burke, Maureen (Ed) Kane, Jack (Martha) Burke, Tom (Regina) Burke, Patricia Burke, Ann (Tony) Coughlin and Eileen (Bob) Hastings; 21 grandchildren, Tom (Ellie) Burke, Michelle (Steve) Blankenship, Mike (Rose), Sean and Patrick Kane, Maureen (Chris) Merkel, Erin, Amy and Jack Burke, Rachel, Katie, Matt, Mary and Kevin Burke, Kevin (Kelly), Emily and Sarah Coughlin, Dan, Mike, Colleen and Tim Hastings; four great-grandchildren, Sean Kane, Emily Blankenship, and Tommy and Ellie Coughlin; two sisters, Agnes Dempsey Brown and Kathryn Dempsey Hasings; and a brother-in-law, Richard Burke.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; and brother, Bishop Michael Dempsey.
The visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at the Church of Holy Apostles, 5211 Bull Valley Road, McHenry. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, in Calvary Cemetery in Evanston (meet at the office).
