Norman Michael Lodtz

CRYSTAL LAKE – Norman Michael Lodtz, 93, passed away peacefully Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, at the Fountains of Crystal Lake with his wife at his side.
Norman was born July 2, 1919, to the late John and Mary (Steinsdoerfer) Lodtz of Crystal Lake. He was united in marriage to Alice (Benson) Smith on March 16, 1963, at Congregational Church in Crystal Lake.
As a young man, Norman was among the first in McHenry County to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, continuing with troop participation as an assistant Scout Master.
He attended and graduated from local schools and after completing a year in the school of engineering at the University of Illinois, he joined his father and brother in business.
Norman joined the Army in 1942, achieving the rank of first lieutenant, and was later recalled to serve on occupation duty with the 4th Division in Germany. Having qualified as a parachutist with the 17th Airborne 513th Parachute Infantry Division, he was awarded the Bronze Star in 1945 for meritorious achievement in the European theater of operations.
Beginning as a lineman and retiring as a construction foreman, Norman was employed by Commonwealth Edison for 42 years. Upon retirement, he and his wife enjoyed traveling, entertaining at their Crystal Lake home, fishing in Minnesota and wintering in their home in Florida. Throughout his life, Norman was an accomplished skater, tailor, bowler, gardener and fisherman, and a whiz with his rotisserie grill.
Throughout his adult years, Norman was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Moose and Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years; a daughter, Peggy (Dale) Pytko of Twin Lakes, Wis.; a son, Michael Lodtz of DeKalb; two grandsons, David (Julie) and Patrick; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Percy Lodtz; and a sister, Marion (John) Englesen.
Interment will be private.
