James A. Baker Obituary

WOODSTOCK – James A. Baker, 76, of Woodstock, died Friday, April 30, 2010, at Hearthstone Manor in Woodstock, surrounded by his family.
He was born May 25, 1933, in Chicago, to Hollis Alden and Alice H. (Carlson) Baker. He married Carol J. Schmidt on Oct. 9, 1953, in Woodstock.
He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a carpenter by trade for more than 50 years, and owned and operated his own company, James A. Baker Carpentry for 23 of those years. He was with the Woodstock Fire Department for 22 years, named fireman of the year in 1987 and retired with the rank of assistant fire chief. He served on the board of directors of Harris Bank Woodstock from 1986 to 2000. He loved spending time with his family, and was an avid model train collector.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Baker of Woodstock; his five children, Steven (Nancy) Baker of Woodstock, Wayne (Holly) Baker of Woodstock, SuzAnne (David) Ehardt of Woodstock, Danette Baker of Omaha, Neb., and Kristee (Brad) Partington of Winona, Minn.; and his eight grandchildren, Britt Ehardt, Chantal Jurgens, Shea Jurgens, Taylor Baker, Alison Baker, Sydney Baker, Abbe Partington and Alexis Partington.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home in Woodstock. The visitation will continue from noon until the 1 p.m. funeral Wednesday, May 5. Interment will follow in McHenry County Memorial Park Cemetery in Woodstock.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation; JDRF; or the Northwestern Clinical Research Unit.

I have fond memories of the times we spent in Minnesota for the JDRF walks, as well as other visits with Jim and the rest of you. I did not know Jim for very long, but I thought he was a wonderful man and I loved his sense of humor. My thoughts and prayers are with you!
