WONDER LAKE – Kenneth Glenn Gabel, 90, of McHenry and formerly of Wonder Lake, died Thursday, May 23, 2013, at Fox Point Manor in McHenry.|
He was born Aug. 2, 1922, in Evanston to Harry A. and Lydia (Manthie) Gabel. On Sept. 6, 1947, he married Betty Jean Fiala. Kenneth was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps. He served in the South Pacific during World War II, receiving three Bronze Stars and the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon. He achieved the rank of corporal at his time of discharge.
He was a resident of Wonder Lake since 1947, moving to McHenry in 2006. He was a former valued employee of Althoff Industry for 43 years. He was a member of Union No. 265 HVAC. He attended Nativity Lutheran Church and Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church.
Kenneth was a member of the McHenry Masonic Lodge 158 A.F. & A.M., the Woodstock Moose Lodge 1329, the American Legion Post 491, the Polish Legion of American Veterans Post 188 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4600.
Survivors include his four children, Pamela (Ralph) Thoma of McHenry, Jeanette (Otis) Lowrimore of Hoover, Ala., Ronald (Yvonne) Gabel of McHenry and Carol (Robert) Housby of Woodland Park, Colo.; 10 grandchildren, Kym (Phil) Belyaev, Kevin Diedrich, Maria Faith (Jason) Lowrimore, Jessi (John) Tymchyshyn, Jimi Hamilton, Brandye (Mike) Lange, Brent (Sariya) Lange, Jenny Housby, Tami (Brad) Housby-McDow and Robert J. Housby; 11 great-grandchildren, Drew, Kati, Zach, Lexi, Colleen, Ryan, Dalton, Kendell, Trenton, Leah, Jasira and one on the way; and special friend, Nettie Keyzer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Gabel on May 26, 2004; infant son, Kenneth Gabel; and his parents.
Friends may meet the family from noon until 3 p.m. Saturday, May 25, 2013, at Justen Funeral Home & Crematory, 3700 W. Charles J. Miller Road, McHenry.
The funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 25, at the funeral home.
