Shirley M. Thompson Obituary
TWIN LAKES, Wis. – Shirley M. Thompson, 90, of Twin Lakes, Wis., and formerly of Spring Grove, passed away surrounded by her family Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington, Wis.
The former Shirley McClanahan (nee Lane) was born June 4, 1922, in Chicago, the daughter of the late Archibald A. and Hallie Isabelle Lane McClanahan. On Nov. 9, 1940, in Clinton, Iowa, she was united in marriage to John Montgomery Thompson. He preceded her in death June 5, 1987. She lived in Spring Grove from 1959 until 1974. She lived in Twin Lakes, Wis., in the winter and Lake Tomahawk, Wis., in the summer.
Shirley attended Northwestern University. She owned and operated the Spring Grove Feed and Seed for many years and the Windjammer Inn in Port Mansfield, Texas.
Shirley was a member of the Daughter's of the American Revolution and wanted to be known as a staunch Republican. She was instrumental in organizing the Spring Grove Horse Fair and the Special Education of Lake County. She was a former member of the Spring Grove School Board and active in many Spring Grove activities. Her special interests were raising her seven children, 18 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She has left a legacy of more than 75 descendants.
She also enjoyed fishing, painting/drawing and animals. She was also a worldwide traveler.
Shirley is survived by her seven children, Susan (John) Thompson Nilles of Spring Grove, Nancy Thompson of Twin Lakes, Wis., Sally Thompson Smith of Twin Lakes, Wis., Linda Jack Thompson of Rhinelander, Wis., John M. (Sandra Kohl Thompson) Thompson Jr. of Port Mansfield, Texas, Hallie J. Moline (Terry) of Eau Claire, Wis. and Merry Kris (Richard) Thompson Brow of Magnolia, Texas; 18 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by one grandson, John Montgomery Thompson III on July 25, 2009.
The Thompson Family would like to thank the Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington and VNA Hospice of Wisconsin for their comfort and care given to Shirley.
The funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 30, at Haase-Lockwood and Association Funeral Home, 620 Legion Dr., Twin Lakes, Wis., with Pastor Nathan Anderson officiating. Interment will be in Cole Cemetery in Spring Grove.
The Thompson Family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 29, at the funeral home.
