BELVIDERE – Durl "Gene" Shull, 77, of Belvidere, passed away Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at his home.

He was born Oct. 8, 1932, in Gibson City, to Roy Albert and Ora (Jardine) Shull. He was a graduate of Illinois State University, Bloomington-Normal. He served in the U.S. Army in Frankfort, Germany. He married Dorothy Frances Mansfield on Aug. 21, 1954, in Bellwood.

He was a retired elementary school principal. He was with District 15 for 28 years and was principal at Plum Grove School from 1962-69, and Lake Louise School in Palatine from 1969-90. He was a Belvidere resident since 2002. He was a member of South Minster Presbyterian Church in Arlington Heights. He was an avid fisherman and golfer.

He is survived by four daughters, Vicki Geier of Johnsburg, Laura (Ross) Scanio of Glendale Heights, Angela (John) Colangelo of Lake in the Hills and Stacy (Dan) Christopher of Hanover Park; his 13 grandchildren; his three great-grandchildren; a brother, Evan (Wilma) Shull of Arlington Heights; and a sister, Vonna (Danny) Heustis of Paxton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy in 2008; a grandson, Joshua Geier; his brothers, Clair, Roy and Dean; and his sisters, Clara, Fran and Beryl.

The visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, at Belvedere Funeral Home, 203 Logan Ave., Belvidere. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 11, at the funeral home with the Rev. Steve Pierce, pastor of Southminster Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will be in Belvidere Cemetery.
