MARENGO – Gertrude Emma Reh, 89, a longtime resident of Marengo, passed away peacefully at home Friday, June 29, 2012, in the company of her loving family.
She was born at home on the family farm in Huntley to August and Edna Borhart Heine.
She was a graduate of Huntley High School class of 1941. After graduation, she was employed at Elgin Watch Factory for several years. In June 1942, she married Richard Sawallisch in Huntley. He preceded her in death in May 1963. In 1965, she married Harold Reh at St. John's Lutheran Church in Union. He preceded her in death in April 2000. She farmed for many years in the area with both husbands.
She was a longtime member of the Harvard Moose Lodge and enjoyed many of their activities. She also belonged to the Ladies Aide at St. John's.
She was a loving wife and mother whose bright smile lifted everyone's spirit. She was a wonderful homemaker and taught her children to be thrifty. She was a faithful member of her church. She had a special passion for birds and had a vast collection of bird figurines. A gifted poetess, she had some of her works published in "The Birds and Bloom" magazine, as well as the Marengo Republican News.
Survivors include her devoted son Kevin (Cathy) Sawallisch and their children, Joey and Emma, all of Marengo; stepson Clark (Marsha) Reh and their children, Heather and Charlotte Reh; and grandchildren Nathienal, Kaitlyne and Raechal Reh.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, Vernon Heine.
A memorial visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 7, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 621 Main St., Union. Pastor Caleb J. Schauer will officiate. Interment will be in Marengo City Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made in her name to the church or Hospice of Northeastern Illinois.
