McHENRY – James L. Althoff Sr., 83, of McHenry, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, Nov. 8, 2011, after a short illness.|
He was born June 9, 1928, in McHenry, and graduated from McHenry Community High School in 1946. He married Joan Andreen on June 18, 1949, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in McHenry.
He founded Althoff Industries (then known as Althoff Heating and Air) in 1962. The business, now located in Crystal Lake, has continued to flourish.
He was a tireless community volunteer, and served on the boards of many organizations, including the McHenry High School District 156 school board from 1967–79, and the Illinois Board of Governors of Higher Education from 1980–91. He was a volunteer fireman and served as the president of the McHenry Fire Protection District for more than 20 years. He was a trustee of the Local 130 Plumbers Union, a board member of Home State Bank in Crystal Lake, and a former president of McHenry Country Club.
He is survived by his wife, Joan; six children, Betsy (Tom) Les of Crystal Lake, Tod (Kim) Althoff of Algonquin, Catherine Althoff (Joel Galanty) of Barrington, Patricia (John) Siwicki of Elk Grove, James of McHenry and Karyn (David) Roelke of Hartland, Wis.; his daughter-in-law, Pamela Althoff; 13 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a sister, Eleanor Wiater of Rolling Hills, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his son, Timothy; and his sisters, Betty Phelan and Ethel Conway Low.
The visitation with the family will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, at Holy Apostles Catholic Church in McHenry. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Home of the Sparrow in McHenry or Turning Point in Woodstock.
