She was born in Harvard, daughter of Loretta Shields Hayden and Ben Hayden, on March 24, 1912. Her marriage to Ralph Deneen of Marengo took place at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Harvard on May 17, 1939. Mr. Deneen preceded her in death May 1, 1995.
Mrs. Deneen spent several years as a secretary in Chicago and later for her husband's building contracting business in Marengo. She was a volunteer for a number of Marengo organizations: the Seniors of Sacred Heart Church, the Rosarians, Marengo Women's Club and St. Joseph's Hospital in Belvidere for 20 years. She and Ralph were members of Bel Mar Country Club for many years.
Her later years were devoted to her three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Many hours were spent with the great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved very much. She spent the past 12 years as a resident of Addolorata Villa, where she enjoyed many activities and was particularly good at the spelling bees.
She is survived by a daughter, Diane Mary (Paul) Spanier of Northbrook; three grandchildren, Mark (Carla) Spanier of Mount Prospect, Christine (Douglas) Pounders of Carol Stream and Susan (Dan) Gavin of Winfield; seven great-grandchildren, Patrick and Nicholas Spanier, Jacob, Adam and Luke Pounders, and Nathan and Elise Gavin; and sister, Grace (Don) Killeen of Harvard.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Harold and Raymond; and sisters, Gertrude, Maybelle and Beatrice.
The visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. until prayers at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at Marengo-Union Funeral Home, 505 E. Grant Highway, Marengo. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 323 N. Taylor St., Marengo. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Marengo.
