McHENRY – Robert Afeld, 87, of McHenry, died Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at Hospice of Northeastern Illinois Inpatient Unit in Woodstock.

He was born Sept. 19, 1922, in Chicago, to Peter and Carrie (Ebert) Afeld. He married Phyllis Smith on April 7, 1951, at St. Mary Catholic Church in McHenry.

He was a construction supervisor for Illinois Bell. He was a veteran of World War II having served with the U.S. Army. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, American Legion, Pioneers (IBT), Holy Name Society (served as president) and Christian Family Movement. He enjoyed fishing, golf and hunting.

He is survived by his children, Pam (Art) Bellon of Marengo, Gary (Kathleen) Afeld of McHenry and Mark (Kelly) Afeld of Woodstock; his nine grandchildren; and his five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis; his parents; and his brother, Daniel.

The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 28, at Colonial Funeral Home. Prayers will said at 9:50 a.m. Saturday, May 29, at the funeral home, until the 10:30 a.m. Mass is celebrated at St. Mary Catholic Church. Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery in McHenry.
