CAYUCOS, Calif. – Sanford John Hull, known as Sandy Hull, died Thursday, July 5, 2012, at his home in Cayucos at age 90.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Helen, and four of his children, Debbie Hull of Bakersfield, Calif., Laura (Joe) Sando of West Covina, Calif., Mary Jo (Pat) Ignoffo of Santa Clara, Calif., and Sanford "Sandy" (Sue) Hull of Laguna Hills, Calif. He leaves 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his sisters, Betty Gillespie of Cary and Sister Lilla Hull, MM, of Maryknoll, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Miriam E. Hull; his son, Michael J. Hull; his parents, Laura and Sanford W. Hull; his brother, James B. Hull; and his sister, Alice Lynch.
Sandy was Chicago born and raised. After graduating from Austin High School, he joined the Merchant Marines, entering the academy at Kings Point, N.Y. He was issued a Seaman Passport and for the duration of World War II, worked as a member of both the Liberty and Victory ships Engine Departments. After the war, he put his experience and knowledge of mechanical systems to work in many of Chicago's downtown commercial buildings. Eventually his position led him into commercial property management, and then commercial sales, leasing and brokerage.
Married in 1945 to Helen Moloney, the Hulls lived for a time in Chicago, and then Sandy built a house in Crystal Lake, where the family lived for 15 years. Having seen California during the war, Sandy always dreamed of living in a warmer climate.
In 1960, Helen and Sandy left Illinois for California; ultimately, they lived in Los Angeles for 25 years, where at first Sandy served as real estate adviser to the Van Nuys family in the sale of major valley properties and later continued property management efforts on several significant office developments and expanding his commercial brokerage activity through his company the S.J. Hull Co.
His Catholic faith was of utmost importance and he worshiped at Our Lady's Chapel in downtown Los Angeles on weekdays. Among the parishes that were significant in his life were Saint Thomas in Crystal Lake, Saint Gregory in Los Angeles, Saint Theresa in South Lake Tahoe, Sacred Heart in Palm Desert and Saint Joseph's in Cayucos.
He loved his God, his wife, his children and his country – in that order. If he had to choose what came after those, it would have been playing golf, boating on Lake Tahoe in his craft "Sandy's Hull," chilling his feet in Eagle Falls at Emerald Bay, swimming in the Maui surf, walking the pier in Cayucos, and his daily stock market updates.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 19, at St. Joseph's Church, 360 Park Ave., Cayucos, with a reception to follow. A graveside prayer service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 26, at San Fernando Mission Cemetery, 11160 Stranwood Ave., Mission Hills, Calif., with a reception to follow.
We will miss his love, guidance and sense of humor. The family appreciates, in lieu of flowers, a contribution in Sandy's name (Sandy Hull Endowment) be made directly to St. Joseph's Church, 360 Park Ave. (P.O. Box 437), Cayucos, CA 93430 or online at http://www.stjosephcayucos.org/sponsorsOnline.html
