WOODSTOCK – Thomas A. Stone, 60, of Woodstock, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, at the Florence Nursing Home in Marengo after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.|
He was born Jan. 16, 1953, in Woodstock, to Charles and Mary F. (Horick) Stone.
Tom was one of a small group of developmentally disabled folks whose parents founded what would evolve into today's Pioneer Center For Human Services.
Tom graduated from SEDOM in Woodstock in 1974, and attended Pioneer Center's workshop in McHenry for the next 34 years. He was a gentle and sweet man who loved traveling, going to movies and out to eat. He enjoyed bowling with NISRA, Disney characters, The Beatles, his family and his many friends.
He is survived by his sister, Kathleen Stone of Woodstock; a niece, Michelle (Nick) Antes of Kenosha, Wis.; and a nephew, Charles "Chip" Stone of Lake in the Hills.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary Jo Stone; a brother, Charles A. "Skip" Stone; and several aunts and uncles.
The visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at the Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, 1211 N. Seminary Ave., Woodstock. The visitation will continue from 10 a.m. until the funeral Mass celebration at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 312 Lincoln Ave., Woodstock. Interment will follow in Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Woodstock.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Developmental Disabilities Program of Pioneer Center, 4001 Dayton St., McHenry, IL 60050 would be appreciated.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Florence Nursing Home in Marengo, who cared for Tom as though he was a member of each of their families.
