McHENRY – Robert E. Carl, 90, of McHenry, died Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at Centegra Hospital – McHenry.
He was born Oct. 10, 1921, in Patchogue, Long Island, N.Y., the son of Otto and Emma (Henchel) Carl. On Dec. 26, 1942, in Joplin, Mo., he married Arlene Flaherty.
Bob worked for Illinois Bell Telephone Co., doing teletype repairs. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army as a tech sergeant in a Signal Corps Signal Service Company in North Africa. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, and American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, both of McHenry. He volunteered more than 20,000 hours at Centegra Hospital – McHenry. He marched with the Commonwealth Edison Knights of Light Senior Drum and Bugle Corps, Chicago. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and a Eucharistic minister.
He enjoyed fishing, high school sporting events and time with family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene; sons, Tom (Dianne) of McHenry, John R. (Ronda) of Glendale Heights and Bill (Cindy) of Lewistown; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 22, at Colonial Funeral Home, 591 Ridgeview Drive, McHenry. Prayers will be said at 9:15 a.m Monday, July 23, at the funeral home, going to St. Mary Catholic Church for a 10 a.m. Mass. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
