Charlene Fern Zimmer Ulanowski Obituary
Charlene Fern Zimmer Ulanowski

Died: June 22, 2014

Charlene Fern Zimmer Ulanowski, age 72, died Sunday, June 22, 2014, at home after a prolonged battle with pancreatic cancer.

Char was preceded in death by her father, Anton Zimmer, her mother, Thelma (Hein) Zimmer; and her sister, Glenaya Smith.

She is survived by her two loving sons and their spouses: Marc (Dr. Michael Kohl- her favorite son-in law), Stephen (Lisbeth Davidson - her favorite daughter-in-law) and a granddaughter, Christina (also her favorite). Cousins Ron and Carol Zimmer, and their children Amy, Kevin and Gary and grandchildren Cody, Austin and Will. Her nephews Tony, Brian (Corrine), Kelly (Trish) and Justin Smith, and many grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Her beloved and devoted Chihuahua Lola, and a menagerie of furry four-legged grandchildren that she adored.

Char was born and raised in Chicago and was a longtime resident of Woodstock, Illinois. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Harvard, Illinois, where she was active in the choir and a member of the Ladies Evening Guild. For over 40 years, Community Theater played a major role in Char's life. She was on the Board of the Town Square Players, and was a member of the Woodstock Music Theater Company and on council of the Woodstock Opera House. She was in several productions over the years. Her all-time favorite role being a secretary in the musical, Gypsy. Offstage, Char's favorite role was that of doting Grandma to her only grandchild, Christina, always referred to as "The Light of Her Life." Together, they formed a mutual admiration society. They may have lived in different states, but their visits together were always filled with fun, games and lots of laughter. Char was not tech-savvy by any means. However, she took the challenge on for mastering Face Time so she could video chat with Christina at least once a week for hours at a time. Char's children would like to acknowledge and thank all those who have offered kind thoughts and prayers throughout her illness, especially to Ron and Carol Zimmer. Both of Char's sons live out of state, and it was Carol who graciously stepped in and took Char to the endless rounds of doctor appointments, chemotherapy, and the occasional ER visit. Ron would sometimes tag along ready to tell a joke as soon as it was needed to help keep Char's spirits up, always willing to fulfill the "big brother" role he held throughout Char's life. The children would also like to thank Char's good friend, Betsy Stemple and her family for being there for her. Finally, they would like to thank all of the wonderful staff at Vitas Hospice. Their wonderful care of Char these past few weeks has been a godsend and her children will be forever grateful.

There will be a memorial service for Char at the Woodstock Opera House on Sunday, June 29th at 3:00p.m.

Per Char's request, in lieu of flowers, a donation to the Town Square Players (TSP) of Woodstock would be appreciated.
