Leonard Charles Hurley, M.D

Obituary Condolences

ALGONQUIN – Dr. Leonard "Len" C. Hurley, M.D., 82, of Algonquin, retired chief pathologist at Sherman Hospital, Elgin, died unexpectedly at his home Wednesday, June 9, 2010, at Lauderdale Lakes, Wis.

Born July 12, 1927, to Leonard and Hazel Hurley, he grew up in Rockford. He enrolled at the University of Illinois in Champaign, but interrupted his studies to enlist in the U.S. Navy, graduating from the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in North Chicago, then serving as pharmacist at the Millington Naval Air Station near Memphis, Tenn. He obtained his medical degree from Loyola University's Stritch School of Medicine in 1953, did his internship at Hines Veterans Hospital in Maywood, and performed his residency at St. Anne's Hospital in Chicago. He joined the Sherman Hospital staff as assistant pathologist in 1959, and was promoted to chief pathologist two years later, a position he held for 33 years until his retirement in 1982. In addition to overseeing the hospital's Clinical Laboratory and Blood Bank operations, he obtained certification in the late 1960s to practice nuclear medicine, becoming the first pathologist in the state of Illinois licensed to perform brain, thyroid and liver scans using radioactive isotopes.

Relentlessly inquisitive, generous to a fault, extraordinarily hardworking with a sense of humor that was equal measures of wit, warmth and deadpan delivery, he was the quintessential physician – calm, competent, caring and kind.

He was the beloved husband of Susan L. (Nepermann) Hurley; loving father of Brian (Mary), Kevin (Mary Lynne), Peggy (Charley) Rich, Maureen (Steve Christian) Corcoran, Matt (Keith Lustig), Megan (Steve Napadow) Guzeman, Chris (Arnold Riddle), Molly (Mark) Nepil, Tim (Kathleen), and Keri (Dave) Personette; and proud grandpa of Michael Hurley, Ryan (Tonya Volk) and Meaghan Hurley, Kelly (Dustin) Cook and Sean (Lindsay) Corcoran, Maggie and Chris Guzeman, Katie, Courtney and Bridget Nepil, and Claire and Andrew Hurley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Margaret Ann; and a sister, Margaret Dobnick.

The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 13, at DeFiore Jorgensen Funeral Home, 10763 Dundee Road, Huntley. The visitation will continue at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 215 Thomas More Drive, Elgin, from 9:30 a.m. Monday, June 14, until the funeral Mass is celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment at St. Mary's Cemetery, Dean Street, Huntley.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bridget Nepil Enrichment Fund at visitation or at any Harris Bank location.
