McHENRY – Harry Alexander Karns, 86, of McHenry, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012, at his home.|
He was born in Pitcairn, Pa., to John and Nellie (Treece) Karns. He married Carol Volck on July 21, 1979, in McHenry.
A veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, he served during World War II for three years as a seaman first class.
Harry was a real estate agent for many years, and also worked in the construction/remodeling business until illness in l997 necessitated his retirement.
He was a member of American Legion Post 491 in McHenry.
Survivors include his loving wife and caregiver of 33 years, Carol; six children, Debbie (Jay) Garner of Plano, Texas, Donna (Chuck) Klein of Genoa, Dana (Mike) Dedona of Scottsdale, Ariz., Denise (Mark) Scholten of Dallas, Trevor (Dawn) Karns of Belvidere and Deanne (Rob) Shover of Vicksburg, Miss.; five stepchildren, Michael (Debra) Karpinski of Spring Grove, Wayne (Judy) Karpinski of Prospect Heights, Eric (Becky) Karpinski of McHenry, Robert Volck of McHenry and Richard (Melissa) Volck of Genoa City, Wis.; 14 grandchildren, Kristy Purtle, Kayla and Spencer Garner, Trevor Clark, Coleman and Natalie Klein, Nicholas Dedona, Michael, Genna and Anna Marie Scholten, Ryan, Kyle and Carolyn Karns, and Sarah Shover; nine step-grandchildren, Ryan, Nathan, Brandon, Madeline, Noah, Austin and Joshua Karpinski, Savannah and Carter Volck; two great-grandchildren, Keaton and Braydon Purtle; and nephews, Rusty, Brett and Scott Karns of Pennsylvania.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ralph; aunts and uncles; and his two best friends, Vince and Roy.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012, at Justen Funeral Home & Crematory, 3700 W. Charles J. Miller Road, McHenry. The funeral service will be at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home. The cremation rite will be accorded privately.
