LAKEWOOD – Walter Siegfried, 73, of Lakewood, passed away Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, with his family by his side.|
He was born Nov. 21, 1938, in Oberpolitz, Germany, the son of Kurt and Berta (Mitterer) Siegfried.
He was raised and educated in Germany, where he later attended electronics school. He came to the United States on Nov. 16, 1961, and worked in Philadelphia as a television technician until being drafted in the U.S. Army in 1963. He was stationed in Korea from May 1964 to May 1965. He met his future wife, Mary, at a USO function in St. Louis. The couple married Oct. 23, 1965, in St. Louis.
Walter owned and operated a television and appliance store in Ste. Genevieve, Mo., from 1970 to 1974. He later became employed as a manager for both RCA and GE Corporations. The couple moved to Arlington Heights in 1982, and he retired from GE in 1998. In September 1999, they moved to Lakewood.
Walter enjoyed watching the stock market, celebrated his German heritage at an annual Oktoberfest, liked to watch soccer, and looked forward to the World Cup. A family man, he especially enjoyed his grandchildren and their events and activities. Among his peers, he was well liked, respected and known to be very kindhearted and a very good storyteller.
Walter is survived by his wife, Mary of Lakewood; daughter, Karin Siegfried Crook of Barrington; son, Walter E. (Michelle) Siegfried of South Elgin; grandchildren, Alexander, Katherine, Emma and Mason; and sister, Marika (Jurgen) Wedler of Munich, Germany.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, and a funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, all at the DeFiore-Jorgensen Funeral Home, 10763 Dundee Road, Huntley. Burial will be in Crystal Lake Memorial Park Cemetery.
