HUNTLEY – Howard M. Berline, 94, of Huntley, formerly of White Hall, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012.|
He was born Oct. 22, 1918, in the Walkerville community, the son of Lloyd and Mabel (Howard) Berline. He married Virginia Beth Neal on Oct. 1, 1938, in St. Charles, Mo.
He graduated from Illinois College in Jacksonville and earned a master's degree in education from the University of Illinois. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Berline coached and taught at schools in the White Hall, Hillview, Roodhouse and North Greene systems. He served as assistant principal of Greene County schools, a position he enjoyed very much, observing the fine teaching done in county schools. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of White Hall, White Hall Masonic Lodge, and the county Farm Bureau. During years spent farming in Greene County, he also served on the elevator board and the North Greene school board.
Mr. Berline was an avid sports fan, supporting the U of I Fighting Illini and the St. Louis Cardinals.
He is survived by a son, Howard Berline of New Jersey; a daughter-in-law, Sally H. Berline of Wheaton; a daughter, Prudence Cole of Huntley; grandchildren, Linda Dodd, Karen Berline, Andrew Cole and Alan (Magdalena) Cole; and great-grandchildren, Logan Dodd, Jenna Dodd, Hania Cole and Maia Cole.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Virginia, in 1998; and his sister, Eileen Kirbach.
The visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at James A. O'Connor Funeral Home, 11603 E. Main St., Huntley. The visitation also will be from 9:30 until the 11 a.m. service Monday, Dec. 10, at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home, 234 N. Main St., White Hall with the Rev. Chad Hoesman officiating.
Burial will be in White Hall Cemetery.
