Ralph E. Johnston Obituary
JOHNSBURG – Ralph E. Johnston, a 55-year resident of Johnsburg, passed away peacefully on Oct. 28, 2013. He was born on Aug. 23, 1925, in Latham, to Harold and Stella (nee Gasaway) Johnston.
Ralph attended the University of Illinois, where he earned his Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering. After he graduated, he served for four years in the Navy during World War II. Ralph later became vice president of operations for Claude S. Gordon Company in Richmond; he was employed there for 40 years.
He was an avid gardener and a golf enthusiast, playing golf for more than 40 years with his Sunday morning, Monday night and Thursday night golf buddies. He also enjoyed winters in Florida and Arizona and loved to attend his grandchildren's sporting events and volunteer at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Ralph was united in marriage at St. Nicholas Church in Chicago on May 26, 1951, to Madeline (nee Berner). They were married for 61 years until her death on Sept. 18, 2012.
Ralph will be deeply missed by his loving children, John (Susan) Johnston of Naperville and Mary Lou (Gerald) Assell of Cincinnati, Ohio; his grandchildren, Jill (Chris) Martelli, Danny (Jenny) Johnston, Jacob (Monica) Chalupa and Zachary Chalupa; his great-grandchildren, Gracie and Benjamin Chalupa; and stepgrandchildren, Jeremy, Gabby and Alex Assell. Many dear nieces, nephews, relatives and friends also survive.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife and his parents.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Oct. 30, from 4 until 8 p.m. at the K.K. Hamsher Funeral Home, 12 N. Pistakee Lake Road, Fox Lake. 
Funeral Mass will be Thursday, Oct. 31, at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 2302 Church St., Johnsburg. All are invited to go directly to the church. Interment will be at St. John Cemetery.
