Joan Bell Obituary

JOAN LUCRETIA BELL (NEE HEWITT) HEBRON, IN Joan Lucretia Bell (nee Hewitt), age 80, of Hebron, IN passed away on Sunday, June 30, 2013 at VNA Hospice. Joan was born to Charles and Dorothy (Wilson) Hewitt on July 19, 1932. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Thomas; four sons: Jeffrey (Margaret) Bell, Randall (Cassandra) Bell, Brian (Sandra) Bell, and Sean (Rebecca) Bell; one daughter, Jill (Philip) Biggs; 13 grandchildren: Bridget (Kurt) Fritzsche, Megan (Joel) Markanich, Meredith (Daril) Fitch, Brandon Biggs, Erin Buck, Justin (Danae) Bell, Caleb (Heidi) Biggs, Colin Bell, Tyler Bell, Abigail Bell, Trey Biggs, Madison Bell, and Nicholas Bell; nine great grandchildren; and longtime friend, Elaine Douglas. Joan was a lifelong resident of Hebron. She attended South Bend College of Commerce after graduating from Hebron High School in 1950. On February 2, 1952, Joan married Tom, her high school sweetheart. In addition to being a busy mother of five children, she held various jobs. Her favorite was working for 25 years as the church secretary at the Hebron United Methodist Church, where she was a lifelong member. At Hebron UMC, Joan was a member of the handbell choir. She was active in the United Methodist Women, in which she loved creating baskets for their annual bazaar and preparing for their rummage sales. She was also involved in the Hebron Historical Society, Hebron High School Alumni Association, Fortnightly Club, and the Junior Women's Club. Joan liked going to garage sales, reading, attending her grandchildren's sporting events, watching Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune, and taking weekly visits to McDonald's for a Big Mac. She loved all holidays - especially Christmas because her favorite things were on display: ornaments, presents, food, and family. Visitation will be Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at Geisen Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 624 N. Main St., Hebron, IN 46341 from 3:00 to 8:00 PM and on Wednesday morning directly at Hebron United Methodist Church from 9:30 AM until the time of service. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at 10:30 AM at Hebron United Methodist Church, 202 W. Church St., Hebron, IN with Pastor Kathie Jones officiating. Joan will be laid to rest at Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso, IN. Memorial gifts are preferred to Hebron United Methodist Women, Hebron, IN.
