Gene M. Swaim

Gene M. Swaim, 91, passed away on June 10, 2013 at Sunrise Senior Living in Flossmoor, IL. He was born on March 22, 1922 in Ossian, IN to Sidney and Forrest Odessa Swaim. Gene grew up in Ossian, IN and graduated from Ossian High School. He received his under graduate degree from Ball State University and received his Master's degree from Indiana University. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and landed on the beach of Normandy on D-Day. After the war, he began his teaching career in Leo, IN. He later took a job in Hammond as a counselor at Hammond High School and later became an Assistant Principal at Gavit Jr. Sr. High School. He retired in 1987. Gene was married to Alberta Swaim. They were happily married for 70 years. Gene was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners, where he played in the Drum and Bugle Corp. He was a member of Woodmar Methodist Church in Hammond, IN. He enjoyed wood working, collecting coins and stamps. Gene is survived by his daughters: Debby Niesen of Tinley Park, IL, Connie (David) Walker of Richmond, TX and Sandra (James) Schultz of Saucier, MS; and grandchildren: Jason (Amy) Brookhart, Samantha Niesen (Joe McShane), Nathan (Jaime) Niesen, Courtney (Skyler) Austin, and Aaron Walker. His great grandchildren are Andrew Brookhart and Finn McShane. A memorial service will be held at Sunrise Senior Living at 19715 Governors Highway in Flossmoor, IL on July 20, 2013 at 10:00 a.m.
