George Edward Lowman Jr.

George Edward Lowman, Jr., age 74, passed away on Saturday, March 9 at St. Anthony's Hospital with his wife and loving children at his side. George is survived by his wife of 50 years, Virginia (Hunt) Lowman; his five children: Tim Handwork, Mitch (Lesli) Handwork, Russ (Dawn) Handwork, Lisa (Brian) Mitchem, and Angela Townsend; 18 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and his sister, Peggy (Harris) Eldridge. George was preceded in death by his father, George Edward Lowman, Sr. and his mother, Anna (Prohosky) Lowman. George graduated from Boone Grove HS in 1957. He attended Ball State University where he played on the baseball team. George worked at Bethlehem Steel as an industrial engineer for 38 years before retiring in 2001. He was an active and leading member of his community, including serving as a volunteer fireman, working for his church, and a term as a township trustee. His roots were in agriculture and he stayed involved with the farming community throughout his life. George was a skilled wood worker and craftsman and could often be found in his garage building or fixing something for friends and family. George was a man who took little and gave much. He was always working, making sure everyone was cared for, protected, and happy. To him, family was everything, but with his large heart and strong hands, he treated everyone he met as family. George made an impact on the lives of all who knew him and he will be greatly missed, especially by his family, of whom he was so very proud.
